Human Perception Was Built to Track Threats, Not Trends. That's Why Patterns Are Structurally Hard to See.
Human perception is exceptionally well-tuned to notice sudden, discrete threats — a loud noise, a fast movement, a sharp change from baseline. It is comparatively poor at noticing slow, distributed trends, because trend-detection was never the survival-relevant skill perception evolved to prioritize.
A recurring behavioral pattern is, almost by definition, the opposite of a sudden threat: it unfolds gradually, across many separate instances, none of which individually crosses whatever threshold perception is tuned to flag. Each instance registers as ordinary. The pattern only exists across instances, in a form perception was never built to hold.
This is a structural limitation, not a personal failing — expecting perception to catch a slow-moving pattern is expecting a system to do a job it wasn't built for, the same way expecting peripheral vision to read fine print misunderstands what peripheral vision is for.
Seeing a pattern clearly requires something other than perception in the moment. It requires a record, assembled across enough instances, examined in a form perception was never designed to process on its own.
