Why Intelligent People Explain Outcomes Instead of Recognizing Sequences
Ask a sharp, articulate person why something went wrong, and you'll usually get a good answer — coherent, specific, often genuinely insightful. Ask them to catch the same thing happening again, in real time, before it produces the same outcome, and the sharpness doesn't transfer nearly as well. Explaining and recognizing are different skills, and intelligence is disproportionately good at only one of them. Explanation Is a Backward-Looking Skill An explanation takes a completed outcome and works backward to a plausible cause. It's a narrative skill, and narrative skill correlates strongly with general intelligence — smart people are good at constructing coherent stories out of available facts. But a completed outcome offers something recognition, by definition, does not yet have: hindsight. The explanation has the whole sequence available to survey at once. Recognition has to work forward, in real time, with the sequence still unfolding and the outcome not yet decided. Why Sequence Recognition Doesn't Scale With Intelligence the Same Way Recognizing a sequence as it's forming requires noticing a moment for what it structurally resembles, while it's still ambiguous, before the resemblance is confirmed by the outcome. That's a fundamentally different cognitive task than analyzing something after the fact — closer to pattern-matching under uncertainty than to narrative construction, and general intelligence doesn't automatically confer skill at it. You can be brilliant at the first and merely adequate at the second, and most of the useful intervention happens in the second, not the first. The Trap This Creates for Smart People Because explanation feels like understanding, and understanding feels like it should be sufficient, intelligent people often stop at the explanation, satisfied that the depth of their insight constitutes real progress. It can constitute real progress on understanding. It rarely constitutes progress on the actual mechanism, because the mechanism was never waiting on a better explanation — it was waiting on being caught earlier, which the explanation, arriving after the fact, structurally cannot do. Why More Explanation Doesn't Compound Into Recognition Getting better and better at explaining outcomes doesn't gradually turn into the ability to recognize sequences in progress. They're different skills, developed differently, and one improving doesn't automatically improve the other — which is why some people can produce increasingly sophisticated accounts of their own patterns for years while the pattern itself stays completely intact. What Actually Builds Sequence Recognition Practice catching the moment while it's still forming, not refining the account of it once it's over. That requires attention trained on the present tense of a pattern, not the past tense — a genuinely different exercise than getting better at explaining what already happened.
